On Wednesday it was announced that Petty GMS, the team Johnson will drive for this season and is a co-owner of, will alter its team name to Legacy Motor Club.
Johnson who is aiming for his 84th career Cup Series victory will drive the No. 84 in Cup this season, he told NBC’s “TODAY” this morning.
The latest move to rebrand the race team name comes as a surprise to many questioning why such a “weird” name was chosen.

“As we were all talking about creating a new name for the team, we looked at Jimmie, myself, and Dale Inman – that’s 22 championships – so there couldn’t be a better name to fit our race team than Legacy.”said Petty.

He added: “When I see the No. 42 and 43 cars, no matter who the driver was, is currently, or could be in the future, I want our fans to remember the Petty history that comes with them, and that history will continue to be made with Legacy M.C.”
Jimmie Johnson also revealed on the “Today Show” that he will be steering the No. 84 Chevrolet on a limited Cup Series schedule in 2023.

The 2023 NASCAR season will be the first without a team carrying the Petty family name.
