Ryan Newman will make his Cup Series return on May 14 since last racing in the series back in 2021.

Newman will make his return to the Cup Series at Darlington on May 14. He will also run ‘select events’ this season driving for Rick Ware Racing.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to work with Rick Ware Racing and Ford,” Newman said in a statement. “I think this will be good for all of us with our combined experience and knowledge.

“Being part of the Throwback Weekend at one of my favorite tracks in Darlington is pretty special. After recently being named one of NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers, it carries even some significance.”

Newman’s last season was in 2021 with Roush Fenway Racing. He finished the season with two top-five finishes and five top-10s. However, the team rebranded to Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing after bringing in Brad Keselowski as driver/owner and let Newman go.

Since then, he participated in Tony Stewart’s SRX summer series.

“I remember watching ‘Thursday Night Thunder’ on ESPN and seeing Ryan compete against some stout competition in those days,” said team owner Rick Ware. “I became a fan then and when he first came to NASCAR, I knew he was going to be a great driver and win a lot of races.

“He brings great depth and insight to RWR while we continue to grow our team. Ryan’s been a great ambassador for our sport and Ford. We’re really looking forward to racing with him this season.”

Newman was also recently listed as one of the 75 greatest drivers in NASCAR history.
